Overview

The Sr. Manger Structures Engineering is responsible for the engineering data, instructions, documents, and technical support that economically ensures the safety, airworthiness, and reliability of Atlas Air aircraft within the following ATA chapter subjects: 25, 27 (structural aspects), 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 71 and 78 (structural aspects). In addition, coordinates engineering activities for a variety of Regulatory/Non-regulatory projects while meeting established corporate goals, objectives and policies.

 

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize Structures Engineering actions.
  • Responsible for managing the activities of the Engineers in the Department to provide technical support for 747/767/737/777 Fleets.
  • Responsible for managing the Liaison Engineering Support Team to supplement existing Structures Engineering AOG/24/7 technical support team.
  • Provide budgetary data on projects and issues as directed.
  • Responsible for effectively managing all Heavy Maintenance & Conversion MROs – Major/Minor Repair Documentation.
  • Issue instructions and documents to economically support operations and return aircraft to service in a safe, airworthy, and timely manner.
  • Manage the activities of the Fleet Type SME’s or the Manager Structures Engineering providing technical support for the existing 747/767/737/777 Fleets.
  • Manage the Project Structures Team.
  • Manage the FAR/AD/NPRM compliance of the existing 747/767/737/777 Fleets.
  • Manage the review, analysis and responses of Fleet team Idea Exchange (FIX) for existing 747/767/737/777 Fleets.
  • Chair/create and manage Working Groups.
  • Develop and/or obtain approved data, acceptable data, and Alternate Methods of Compliance (AMOCs) for repairs, alterations, and modifications.
  • Update technical source documents as applicable to insure accuracy.
  • Support integration of new and previously operated aircraft. Analysis and determination of Major Repairs, AD’s, STC’s and the follow on actions prior to Aircraft induction to the fleet.
  • Liaise with manufacturers; maintenance representatives, repair & overhaul (MRO) facilities; outside engineering departments; regulatory personnel; and other outside agencies.
  • Participate in industry working groups, industry steering committees, industry meetings, and conferences.
  • Review work of consultant, contract, and MRO Powerplant Engineers.
  • Evaluate Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRMs), Airworthiness Directives (ADs), Service Bulletins (SBs), Service Letters (SLs), and other notifications of in-service issues.
  • Develop product improvement modifications as dictated by Reliability indicators.
  • Work with original equipment manufacturers on emerging issues to help ensure safety and airworthiness, but also minimize the economic impact.
  • Organize, develop and provide all necessary Structures Engineering documentation required to complete aircraft Structural modifications and repairs within the allocated time schedule and budget allowance.
  • Provide technical support to Technical Operations, Ground Operations, Flight Operations, and other Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings personnel.
  • Manage and implement the RAP (Repair Assessment Program)
  • Develop, manage and implement programs to comply with new FARs on Repairs, Alterations, and Modifications and other Aging Aircraft Programs such as Widespread Fatigue Damage (WFD).
  • Review maintenance programs, and initiate maintenance programs changes and changes to maintenance documents.
  • Responsible for directing/manage the Corrosion Control Program (CPCP) for all fleet types: 747-400, 747-8, 767, 777 and 737.
  • Report on the status of projects and issues as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Director Engineering & Maintenance Programs.

Major Job Accountabilities:

  • Provide leadership and mentoring to a multi-discipline/multi-product Structures engineering team.
  • Lead and support the engineering staff to develop a high performing team.
  • Drive to maintain a high performance work culture by providing leadership to the team through performance planning & assessment, coaching and resolution of escalated issues.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic plan for the engineering team, in support of Tech Ops and customer objectives, with a focus on innovation and best practices and create standard work for all engineering activities (Desktop Procedures).
  • Ensure consistent management practices across the Company’s portfolio and ensure achievement of Management by Objectives (MBOs).
  • Manage the Fleet Type SME’s and teams.
  • Actively manage direct reports to ensure the Company meets or exceeds all contractual MBO’s for Structures.
  • Provide strategic and tactical direction for the Structures department.
  • Manage department / cost center budgets to plan.
  • Manage department budgets, indirect cost management, budget planning and forecasting
  • Manage resources to support program schedules, balancing needs, priorities and cost.
  • Guide the Structures Dept to continue along a Continuous Improvement path utilizing process improvement methods/tools/training.
  • Work to standardize legacy processes and develop new breakthrough processes.
  • Provide leadership and direction to identify, plan and implement projects that tie strongly to the business strategic plan and corporate objectives.
  • Assist in the identification and removal of barriers to successful project completion.
  • Manage key customers as required for technical support / issue management.
  • Drive issues to closure efficiently with high customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee new MRO induction activities.
  • Administer company policies while maintaining positive employer/employee relations.
  • Support introduction of new processes.
  • Balance customer requirements with team requirements
  • Define, document, negotiate, communicate, own, and deliver a team roadmap, from implementing new processes, to collaborating with internal/external customers to bring prototypes into a complete state.
  • Distill and communicate technical concepts to the team and other stakeholders.
  • Foster a constructive dialogue and argue for the right outcomes with data, conviction, and diplomacy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in an Engineering discipline or an equivalent combination of formal education, on-the-job training, and/or work experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years in Aircraft Structures Engineering with Management of workforce experience.
  • Strong technical skills and knowledge of Wide Body Structure/Systems and components design.
  • Ability to interface with manufacturers and regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results in an airline environment.
  • Proven experience building, managing and developing effective and innovative technical teams.
  • Ability and passion to bring vision and innovation to the engineering function.
  • Effective collaboration skills and strategy development with peers and senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with leadership (minimum – up to 2 levels up)
  • Strict adherence to meeting scheduling deadlines and holding individuals accountable to meet customer requirements.

  • Strong technical skills and with extensive background in Structures and Management.
  • Ability to identify safe, cost effective solutions.
  • High degree of independent judgement and decision making concerning matters of significance to company.
  • Ability to conduct business/technical briefings to internal and external representatives.
  • Ability to interface with regulatory agencies and other departments in a collaborative manner.

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s in Engineering. MBA greatest preference.
  • A&P Certificate (Preferred).
  • Airline / Aerospace industry experience.

Salary Range: $132,500 - $179,500

 

Financial offer within the stated range will be based on multiple factors to include but not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset.
